Denbigh Asylum

Situated in Denbighshire, Wales, the North Wales Hospital, commonly known as Denbigh Asylum, was established in 1848 with the purpose of treating and caring for 200 Welsh-speaking patients afflicted with mental illnesses. However, as the number of patients grew, the asylum faced challenges with overcrowding, prompting expansions to accommodate up to 1500 patients by 1956. Despite the unsettling stories that emerged from within its walls, the hospital remained operational until 1987, when its closure was announced. The last patient departed in 1995.

After its closure, the grounds of the hospital were left to the mercy of the elements. The site's owners neglected the land, stripping it of anything of value, and the buildings were left to deteriorate. Over time, the abandoned asylum became a fascination for urban explorers and enthusiasts, eager to catch a glimpse of its former grandeur. Unfortunately, with the increase in visitors, incidents of vandalism also escalated. Tragically, multiple arson attacks occurred, rendering some sections of the Grade II listed buildings irreparable.
