Funeral March
Extinction Rebellion (XR) is a global environmental movement that aims to address the climate and ecological crisis through non-violent direct action and civil disobedience. XR was founded in the United Kingdom in 2018 and has since gained international recognition. The movement demands that governments and institutions take urgent action to mitigate climate change and halt biodiversity loss. XR advocates for radical changes in political, economic, and social systems, emphasizing the need for carbon neutrality by 2025 and the establishment of citizens' assemblies to guide decision-making on environmental issues. Through protests, disruptions, and other forms of activism, XR seeks to raise awareness, force governments to act, and create a sustainable future for all.
After hearing about Extinction Rebellion at university I decided to get involved and take my camera to a funeral-style procession they held in Truro, Cornwall. This event aimed to draw attention to the devastating loss of plant and animal species driven to extinction by human actions.
Photographing people was new to me and something I had shied away from up until this point but I really enjoyed trying to capture the emotion of the day through people’s faces and the images I took. This experience compelled me to document various protests in the years that followed. By employing my photography skills, I discovered a powerful means of shedding light on the crucial issues that individuals were bravely standing up for.
